Dallas, Texas

one review (average star rating: 2.0 out of 5.0)

Why did you choose this fieldwork?

Exposure to a wide variety of diagnoses

Please indicate type of setting:

Inpatient, Outpatient

Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)

I lived with family and drove to the site. There is public transportation: DART, with a bus and rail station next to the site's employee parking lot. I paid $25 for a parking pass and received $10 back at the end of my FW.

Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.

I was in outpatient and saw everything: shoulder conditions (rotator cuff tears, impingements, adhesive capsulitis, fractures & ORIF's, osteoarthritis), carpal tunnel syndrome, lateral epicondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, MS, ALS, cancer, burn, gunshot wound, stroke, TBI, etc. They were all adults. Many additionally had mental health problems and all had difficult social conditions as well.

What types of assessments and interventions were used?

DASH (short form) and FIM scoring of ADL's
standard motor assessments for ROM, strength, and sensation

What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)

The site is highly structured, but there is an overall sense of underlying tension. The site's employees did not demonstrate open and honest communication with one another and students. The mentoring was less supportive and more pressuring the students to live up to their standards.

Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.

Hard-worker, self initiator, excellent communicator, adaptability, and someone who is assertive, works well under pressure, can keep up a challenging caseload, and is very strong in anatomy
