Why did you choose this fieldwork?

Had a fantastic experience as a level 1 student.

Please indicate type of setting:

Inpatient

Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)

Accommodations were offered through Western MD AHEC right across the street from the hospital. Very affordable, clean, and convenient.

Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.

Worked with all types of psychiatric conditions. Bipolar disorder, Addictions, PTSD, Post Partum Depression, Schizophrenia, etc. Ages ranged from late teens to geriatric population.

What types of assessments and interventions were used?

Patient's were required to participate in 3 daily OT groups, as well as addictions groups, and other beneficial services offered by therapists, doctors, and social workers. OT groups focused on developing positive coping skills, self esteem, daily routines, positive leisure activities, etc.

What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)

The entire BHU staff was very welcoming. They helped with any questions I had. They were all used to having students, and would often joke around/play pranks on students. I always felt like part of their team. The OT staff was excellent. They have so much experience and knowledge. Any student should consider themselves lucky to learn from these ladies!

Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.

Students at this site must possess several qualities...self awareness, assertiveness, confidence, independence, dependability, creativity, and an open mind.

While in the area, don't miss ...

Great shopping/eating in the area. Be sure to visit the historic downtown area. If you are lucky, you will get to experience "AC Moore Day" to buy tons of craft supplies!

How many stars would you give your experience, from one to five?

Any lasting thoughts or advice?

Even though this was a psychiatric setting, I still learned vital information about how to relate to my patients. Nothing but positive things to say about WCH BHU!
