Why did you choose this fieldwork?
I did not have a choice
Please indicate type of setting:
Acute
Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)
I live in an apartment nearby. It is accessible by public transportation and free subsidized parking is available. The location is in a low-income urban neighborhood. Students should be careful when traveling alone, however, I had no issues with safety.
Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.
1 OT for the entire hospital. Diagnoses were vast from neuro (stroke, TBI, MS, cranial surgery, etc.), to ortho (trauma - gun shot wounds, motor vehicle crashes, falls, SCI; elective surgeries - spinal, knee, hand, hip, etc.; amputations, etc.) to oncology, cardiac, etc. On all wings of hospital geriatric/med surg/general med, to ICU.
What types of assessments and interventions were used?
FIM, MMT, ROM, LOTCA, general vision, cognitive, orientation screens/tests
What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)
Organization was fair - I was the first Level II student, so it will only get better.
Collaboration and learning opportunities were good - a lot of opportunities for co-treats with other disciplines, to attend in-services, etc.
Mentoring - good. I was my supervisor's first Level II student, so we had a few kinks to work out. Not much mention of clinical reasoning or exercises to build clinical reasoning.
Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.
Flexible, quick thinking, fast-paced, accepting of all races, poverty-levels, lifestyle choices, etc.
While in the area, don't miss ...
Philadelphia museum of art, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell... and all the delicious restaurants!
How many stars would you give your experience, from one to five?
