Why did you choose this fieldwork?
I wanted to see OT in this setting specifically. I am interested in working in a NICU in the future.
Please indicate type of setting:
Inpatient, Acute
Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)
I have friends from college who lived about 20 minutes from the hospital. I drove to and from the hospital and parking was provided with no charge. I lucked out that when I was expected to be there and when I got to leave was not exactly during rush hour.
Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.
At this hospital, there are regular acute patients rooms which are a step below the PICU and TICU (technolgy based ICU). There is also a large NICU. I saw a variety of dx from car accidents, neurosurgeries, congenital defects, gastric pathology, seizure disorders, brain tumors, and cancer. A great plus to this acute setting is that there is an inpatient peds rehab facility in the same building where you can also spend some time.
What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)
The collaboration in the acute rehab department was really great. You could see the way all the rehab professionals worked together to improve the outcomes of the patients. The students were treated with respect and offered opportunites for in-service learning, attend rounds and follow a therapist on the rehab unit.
Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.
Def. need to be organized! Have to enjoy fast pace and enjoy seeing new situations and dx every day. Have to be willing to work with parents and familes of sick or injured children. Seeing this population takes a very special and strong person!
While in the area, don't miss ...
Well, its Atlanta! Take advantage of everything a city this size has to offer!
How many stars would you give your experience, from one to five?
