Durham Regional Hospital
Durham, North Carolina

Why did you choose this fieldwork?
I wanted to gain experience in physical rehabilitation in a more intimate hospital environment. Durham Regional is a part of the Duke Health System but not a massive hospital.
Please indicate type of setting:
Inpatient
Please describe your living and commuting situation. (Was accomodation offered? Public transportation or parking offered? Please include price paid, location and conditions.)
Parking was free at the hospital. I lived about 10 miles away, so I didn't need to find accomodations. Traffic off of I-85 was occassionally heavy but overall an easy location to find/get to.
Describe types of conditions or diagnoses, as well as age ranges exposed to during this fieldwork.
We served mostly adult populations from 18-90 with various conditions but mostly CVA (and other neuro conditions), multi-trauma, orthopedics, spinal cord injury, and general deconditioning/cardiac.
What types of assessments and interventions were used?
Inpatient rehab has different evaluation forms for the type of diagnoses, so assessments would vary. Assessment included ADL status, cognition, balance, strength/coordination, vision/perception. FIM is the primary tool for assessing functional progress. Occupation-based, client centered interventions are used with a strong focus on remediation, adaptation and compensation techniques.
What are your thoughts on the site's environment for the employees and students? (Please consider: organization, collaboration, mentoring, learning opportunities)
Very supportive staff.
Please comment on personality traits and/or preparation that would facilitate success at this site.
Initiative, autonomy, independence, patience, creativity, comfort in hospital setting.
While in the area, don't miss ...
The Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) is a great area to live. So many fun things to do, especially if you enjoy college sports. Aside from UNC/DUKE/NC State in the area, there are a variety of outdoor activities, art, concerts, farmers markets, shopping.
How many stars would you give your experience, from one to five?
